Form 2290 for single-truck owner-operators

File the federal Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) once a year on your tractor. We're an IRS-authorized e-file provider — submit your VIN, EIN, and weight class and we file directly with the IRS for a $149 service fee, returning your stamped Schedule 1 the same business day.

Why owner-operators need Form 2290

The Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) is a federal excise tax on highway vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more. The tax is collected by the IRS, reported on Form 2290, and the resulting stamped Schedule 1 is what your state DMV needs before it issues IRP plates or annual registration. Without the stamped Schedule 1, your truck is not legally registered for the new HVUT year, regardless of whether you have plates in hand.

For a single-truck owner-operator running a Class 8 tractor at 80,000 lbs over 5,000 miles a year, the HVUT itself is $550 (paid to the IRS, not to us). Our service fee of $149 covers preparation and same-day IRS e-filing through our authorized e-file provider account.

When is your filing due?

The HVUT tax year runs July 1 through June 30. A truck used during July of the new tax year is due August 31 — that's the most common annual deadline for owner-operators with a single rolling tractor. New trucks purchased mid-year are due the last day of the month after the month of first use; the tax is prorated by the IRS automatically. See our Form 2290 deadline walkthrough for the per-month proration math.

What's included in our service

  • Form 2290 prepared by a licensed tax preparer
  • Same-business-day IRS e-file submission
  • Stamped Schedule 1 PDF emailed back the same day
  • One-truck or multi-truck filings supported
  • VIN-correction support if the original IRS return had a typo
  • EIN guidance — you must file under an EIN, not an SSN

How fast can we file?

Most filings submitted before 4 PM Eastern receive the IRS-stamped Schedule 1 within 1-3 hours. Filings after hours queue and clear next business morning. The stamped Schedule 1 is the document your state DMV needs for IRP renewal, so same-day delivery means you can renew plates the same day you file.

Owner-operator 2290 questions

When is Form 2290 due for an owner-operator?

Form 2290 is an annual filing for the federal Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). The HVUT tax year runs July 1 through June 30. The default filing deadline is the last day of the month after the truck's "first use" — for most owner-operators that's August 31, since the new tax year starts July 1 and a truck used during July must be filed by August 31. A new truck purchased mid-year is due the last day of the month after the month of first use.

How much HVUT does a single-truck owner-operator owe?

For a Class 8 tractor at 80,000 lbs taxable gross weight running over 5,000 miles a year, the HVUT is $550 per truck per year. Logging vehicles get a 25% reduction ($412.50). The full IRS HVUT table at gross weights from 55,000 lbs to 80,000+ lbs runs $100 to $550. Suspended vehicles (Category W, expected to run under 5,000 miles) owe $0 but still must file.

I bought a new truck mid-year — when do I file?

Form 2290 is due the last day of the month following the month of first use. So a truck first used in November is due December 31. The HVUT is prorated by the IRS based on the months remaining in the federal tax year. The Schedule 1 you receive shows the prorated tax paid and the state DMV uses it for IRP/registration purposes.
