2290 Tax Calculator (2026–27 Tax Period)
The heavy vehicle use tax on Form 2290 runs $100 to $550 per truck per year, set by taxable gross weight categories A through V under 26 USC §4481. Pick your category, logging status, and first-use month and this calculator returns the exact amount from the IRS Form 2290 (Rev. July 2026) tables — annual for July, the IRS partial-period amount for any later month.
HVUT owed to the IRS
$100.00
Full annual rate for Category A (55,000 lbs) first used in July. Return due August 31, 2026.
Expect 5,000 highway miles or less (7,500 agricultural)? The truck is tax-suspended - Category W, $0, but it still goes on Schedule 1. This is the tax itself; a Fast 2290 filing is $149 per vehicle on top, and the full A–V table lives in the vehicle categories guide.
How the math works
The statute sets $100 for a 55,000-pound truck (Category A) plus $22 for each extra 1,000 pounds, capping at $550.00once the truck is over 75,000 pounds (Category V) — which is where a loaded 80,000-lb tractor-trailer lands. Logging vehicles pay 75% of each rate. A truck first used after July owes a prorated share: the annual rate times the months from first use through June, divided by 12. The amounts here reproduce the IRS Partial-Period Tax Tables (Table I, and Table II for logging) to the cent — including the IRS's own rounding on logging amounts, which is why a September logging truck in Category A shows $62.49 rather than $62.50.

This tool shows the tax owed to the IRS with your return. It is separate from Fast 2290 Filing's $149 per-vehicle preparation fee, and it isn't tax advice — confirm your category against your registered weight before filing.
